well, some of you may have noticed that it's Wednesday again. and so, still keeping with my new year resolution, i've finished my sixth installment of my 52-week Batman extravaganza. i must admit, this is my favorite so far. it was the most fun to do and i feel like if i had a "style", this would be it. so maybe my journey has already come to an end with this whole 52 Batmen experiment! i dunno, maybe not. gonna do more before i settle here, but i hope you like this one. my favorite comment about it so far was a wish to see this guy in an animated series. i could be down for that cartoon version for a (temporary) change :0)

well, here's the new Batman for this week. starting to think that having it done on Wednesdays is complicated for me. throws me off quite a bit. nevertheless, i've completed the Caped Crusader in what makes me think of the old 1940's Batman movie serials. anyone seen those? no? just me? yeah, probably. well anyway, i like that it has that same creepy old-timey and hyper-real vibe to it. this little guy is actually only about the size of my palm. quite small for a sketch like this, but it was fun to bust out some graphite for this week's Batman. it's been a while since i've drawn something and had the outer ridge of my hand all black. ok, enough rambling. you look at this one, i gotta get back to work on Ace!

so, i may have made a mistake. you see, many of you know that i'm working on a graphic novel right now. i thought it'd be great to share my progress with those interested in the book because i get so many frequent questions about it (which is quite flattering, by the way!). the only thing is, i think i blew it by creating a Tumblr account to share my works.

i guess Tumblr itself is pretty cool, but it's not for me. see, the problem is that it's built more for ramblings (not in a negative way) as opposed to a project-specific house for materials. also, i thought it'd be cool to branch out to something newer to see what all the hubbub was about, but i'm finding that i'm quite happy with Google's performance with Blogger (which i should've known from the start). AND SO! i've decided to move over the House of Grizzle from Tumblr to Blogger, which is nice because this will keep all of my blogs together under one roof, AND it allows for easier following for my friends who are interested in the book. i could be wrong, but with Tumblr it seems as though you have to have a Tumblr account to "follow" one. with Google though, they make it easier for practically anyone to follow a blog so that they're properly being updated on it.

anyway, i hope i didn't just waste two minutes of your day that you could've really used. nonetheless, i thank you for your interest and occasional visits to any of my blogs. if you have a sec, shuffle on over to House of Grizzle to learn more about my comic, make some comments, and even give it a "follow" if your diggin what you're retinas are pickin up! you can click the image of Ace to the right to take you there!

well, it looks like i'll have to break the pattern a little this week. since SOPA/PIPA is trying to implement internet censorship, there's a posting blackout happening on the webbernet tomorrow, and i don't want to be the only lame-o posting during this epic time of digital conquest... not that a little guy like me has much effect in this happening. so with that, here's my latest Batman illustration in this year-long endeavor. can you dig it?

here's another one. second installment of my loooong road of Batmen. this one's sort of an homage to one of my favorite comic makers out there right now, Ted Seko. i'll never be that awesome, but at least this piece came out interestingly. i like how his style's taken a noticeable influence on my own.

so i recently had an idea that was sparked by a blog that showed the 30 coolest Batman illustrations of the year. it reignited a flame of mine to draw a super rad, mega righteous Batman design. i figured i'll draw one every week until i come up with one that i'm really satisfied with. the first one was sort of a crappy doodle experiment to get this going for Week 01, but sometimes those are the most fun to draw. in any case, the plan is to post one every Wednesday for the whole year. hope you'll come back to check them out!

happy new year, friends!

is that old? getting cliché, is it? tired of seeing it plastered all over your Facebook wall? well, i understand. but unfortunately my parents raised a fine, young chap with a strong set of manners, so here's wishing you well for your 2012.

with keeping in tradition of my blog, i've given it the ol' annual facelift. hope you dig it. for those of you who know my strange (and possibly unhealthy) obsession with American 1970s culture, you're probably not surprised that i've decided to use a 70s funk flare (suggested by katy.r) to generate a theme for my blog this year -- complete with hideous color scheme and shag-a-delic fonts! can you dig it??

unfortunately, i have no exciting drawings to post because of the holiday season and all that comes with wrapping up 2011. on that note, i may have some super interesting news to share with my tiny, but loyal fan base (you who are reading this) within the week. stay tuned for that. so instead of a drawing, i'll leave you with the new short collection of websiodes that i've been working on over the last few weeks. many of you might have seen this on YouTube or my Facebook already, but if you haven't, i'll post this riveting mini-series below... but don't expect too much.

oh, and thanks for your support over the years. it's always nice when people like to look at and share one's artwork with others :0)

WELP! here it is. right on time as i promised. hope it was worth the wait. thanks to everyone who expressed excitement and enthusiasm for me to actually get a piece of extraneous artwork done. i had a lot of fun with it (for obvious reasons). many of you found humor within the immediate content, and some of you where able to pull the additional level of humor. basically, this is a call to the line in Batman Begins. it's a pivotal point in Batman's character when he's getting the hang of mastering the art of instilling fear in criminal scum! (it's also a line that Noel and i used to make fun of quite a bit back in the day -- oh, Christian Bale... ::sigh::)

anyway, as i promised, i'm offering 25 signed prints of this guy for $20 each. if you'd like one, please email me. i have a feeling they'll go quickly because i've been posting about this on Facebook, Twitter and Google+, and some people have already been calling dibs. as always, i appreciate your support and enthusiasm.

WELP! here it is, fans of optik nourishment. this is the print i promised you all for Christmas 2011. this is the black & white version so you can see it all cleaned up before being colored. (some people like that part of the process.) i want to have the colored version done within the next day or two. in any case, consider this my Christmas present to you all since i've been M.I.A. for so long. my apologies. things have been quite hectic for me, as some of you know. nevertheless, i'm on the rebound and this is my first piece to prove it. hope ya'll dig it. unfortunately, i realized last night after finishing it that i seemed to have drawn this for myself -- whoopsie. in any case, i think i'm going to do 25 signed (color, 8x10) prints of this for anyone out there who digs this as much as i do. let me know if any of you are interested in this. i'll understand if you want to wait to see the colored version, so i'll be sure to annouce when it's done on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook. thanks for staying fans through my brief hiatus, dear friends! happy holidizzays and whatevs.

so i don't use my blog very often for this kind of thing, but i feel pretty compelled to bring this to the attention of my friends.

as many of you know, i am definitely not an advocate of the 3-D movement. in general, it's a waste of money to see something in 3D at the movie theater. the only movie that i felt was truly worth anything in 3D was Coraline. in fact, i paid to see it twice in the theater! anyway, i say all that to say this: please don't waste $16 or more to go see Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D this holiday season. instead, what you SHOULD do is spend $20 to purchase it on Blu-ray!!

so last night i had the immense pleasure of watching one of my all-time favorite movies (probably top 10) on Blu-ray for the first time. DOOD. what an experience. keep in mind, this is a movie i've seen almost 100 times since it's release in 1993. and i still couldn't believe how many new things i noticed in this movie after watching it. and even though i'm always amazed by this movie every time i watch it, last night i was blown away by textures and colors happening that i never noticed before. it was truly an eye feast! anyway, i highly recommend checking it out if you haven't yet. for me, it was a much better investment then a gimmicky 3D experience.

oh, and Happy Halloweenie!

well, the last few days have been interesting. a lot has finally settled down for me post-Comic Con. many of you probably feel the same way. it's been nice to not have to draw much since last Thursday, so i've been spending more time catching up in cyber space. for example, an interview i did for animationinsider.com was posted yesterday! that's pretty rad. you can read it here:

other than that, i fiiiinally got some boards up online. many people ask me why i don't have any up, and the short answer is that i didn't have a great way to show them. i personally hate reading storyboards online and having to click through them one page at a time just to enlarge it enough to read. it gets really old, really fast. i guess i just thought others felt the same. but recently, i was advised to check out carbonmade.com to see if i could use it to suit my needs. so far this seems to work better because there's an option to scroll through a board (at a reasonable size) like a flipbook, making it much easier to read. would you like to take a look at a couple board samples? you can see them here:

many of you have been wondering what all this freelance is that i've been up to lately. so i've decided to go ahead and post some of the stuff that i think you'd find interesting. one of the projects i've been working on are these character designs. it's been a pretty fun ride, i must admit. essentially, i'm creating flower-people with only two real restrictions: 1) generating a personalities based on the list of character names, and 2) making sure to use the five-pedaled flower a person normally thinks of when doodling flowers. that's it. everything else is up to me. so i have to create one for each of the 12 names on this list, but here are the first few. for protection purposes on the intellectual properties, i'm leaving off the names (..but probably all you really care about is if i can draw or not).

so what's great is that these characters were brought to life by the talented Ashley Stoddard. she did a fantastic job coloring these little guys and hopefully you'll be able to see the colored versions by clicking over to her blog once she uploads them.

hope you dig what we've done!

so the other morning i was watching SpongeBob because they'd aired an episode that i drew on but hadn't seen yet. if you follow me on Twitter, you probably remember mentioning how much the backgrounds were a pain in this particular episode because they played an integral part to the storyline and had to be treated as such. so, that meant i spent quite a bit of time planning and rendering out the backgrounds. here's an example:

Oh Girl album artwork

so if you were following any of the garbage i mentioned on Twitter, you'd know that i spent the last couple weeks working on the album artwork for the two-man, alternative, improv, indie-rock band, Oh Girl. they have a really cool way of releasing their album this month! two songs every month, for the next five months! first up was two songs that i had the honor of illustrating: "nyc" and "Batman". what's even better is that when you visit Band Camp you get to listen to the songs (which are EXTREMELY catchy) and, if you like them, download a mini package that includes the two songs AND the album artwork in high quality! so here it is, the piece i did for the gallery this week at work. it's actually 1 of a 3-piece series. a couple buddies (Fred & Emily from the new Avatar spin-off... the cartoon, not the blue people) did the other two pieces. the series is called "These ARE the Droids You're Looking For". i think they plan to put up their pieces on our Chocolate Lab blog, so you can hop on over to check 'em out.

72 unsuspecting members of 24 Hour Fitness had the esteemed pleasure of working out with Mr. Incredible this morning. my brother and i saw this guy in his Gatorade-yellow colored shirt working out across the floor from us. it was great! he was even so kind as to sing for everyone on the upper floor (for those of us who forgot to bring our own ipods) at the top of his lungs. and in case we were missing it, he grunted with each power-packed pump so we wouldn't feel bad that he worked out that whole time and we let it pass without noticing!

it could have been his angelic, American Idol reject pipes that he sang with, or it may have been because we were in awe of his presence, but no one could stop glancing over just in time to happen to catch the not-so-rare occasion of him striking this exact pose in the mirror. i'm only guessing that this is what he saw, but i may be overshooting his modesty. he was one hell of a man!

well, it's hard to believe so much time went by without a single post. alas, here i am posting and writing to nobody. that's ok though, cuz this way if you DO come back, you'll have plenty to check out for the year twenty-ten! and who knows what newcomers will join us? i sure don't! nevertheless, here is my first post back on the scene:

the sketch above is something i jotted down in an attempt to illustrate the mindset i was in from listening to this newer album i received. no, i'm not a masochist. i was recently given an album of a vocalist (who name i won't mention in the miniscule chance it gets back to her) by a friend of mine who generally has great taste in music. for a few reasons though, this album didn't cut it for me. neither did the second disc that is supposed to be better. trying to listen to an entire album of her "smooth, sultry sounds" that her lounge-singer style implies makes me feel like i've been strung up by my wrists and slashed with several paper cuts on my toes so that i'm slowly being drained of life. know what i mean?

this little doodle i did was done last night in a class for work. for some reason, i pay better attention when i'm drawing during class. it works out i guess cuz it probably looks like i'm just taking notes.
